Butt Plate Joint
SPS+
The SPS+ program is used to design moment-resistant, bolted butt plate joints in steel construction. The butt plate joint can be defined flush or projecting and with two or four vertical bolt rows. Furthermore, an inclination of the beam can also be considered.

- Structural steel: S235, S275, S355, S450
- Annealed steel (S275N – S460N)
- Thermo-steel (S275M – S460M)
- Weathering steel (S235W – S355W)
- High-temperature steel (S460Q – S460QL1)
- Hollow section, hot-finished (S235H – S355H)
- Hollow section, hot-finished, fine-grain (S275NH – S460NH)

Structural system
Connection configuration:
- Butt plate joint flush or projecting on one side and with two or four vertical bolt rows
- An inclined beam is possible
- The user can specify the thickness of the butt plates, their geometry as well as the bolt patterns or select a connection from the catalogue of connection configurations
Cross-sections:
- I-sections as standard shapes
- User-defined I-sections
Loads
- Design internal forces from axial force, moment and shear force
- Multiple combinations of design internal forces can be entered
Fasteners
- Bolts (black bolts and fit bolts)
- Sizes: M12, M16, M20, M22, M24, M27, M30, M36
- Strength classes 4.6; 5.6; 8.8; 10.9
Design
The calculation is based on the component method as per DIN EN 1993-1-8. For the verification of but plate joints with four vertical bolt rows, the model described in the following publications is used:
Either the elastic or plastic cross-sectional resistance is verified.
